It’s not often that one gets to purchase their dream ride, especially when it’s a very specific custom truck that you’ve been drooling over for more than a decade! You’re kind of stuck unless the owner decides to sell, but how often does that happen considering it is probably their dream truck as well?
Luckily for Ken Morse, patience and luck were in his favor when he was finally able to scoop up the ’91 Chevy S-10 Blazer you see here.
Originally built by Ferlin York and his buddies over the course of several years, Ken had first come across the SUV in 2008 while it was still under construction. Having had a thing for S-10 Blazers since his younger years, Ken could see that the Chevy had the makings of something special.
“I remember talking to my wife about the truck all the way back home, and how I couldn’t wait to see the end result,” he says.
Ken lost sight of the Blazer for a while, wondering what had become of it.
“I didn’t really see any photos of the truck after that, and never heard much about the progress,” he says. “Then in 2016, I believe, I was at Slamfest and under the pavilion I saw this beautiful Blazer. After looking it over, I started talking to some guys and realized this was Ferlin’s truck—the same truck I had seen many years before with surface rust, no interior, and no engine at the time.”
It really deserves to be seen and my son loves it, too, so I hope when he’s a bit older we can cruise together in it.
Being overwhelmed at the end result, Ken couldn’t believe the transformation and remained busy taking it all in.
“Here I am at Slamfest, talking to Ferlin, and geeking out like a schoolgirl over his truck, realizing it looked even better than the vision I had made up in my head back then,” Ken says.
Fast-forward a few years, and Ken had come close to closing the deal on a couple of S-10 Blazers that kind of reminded him of Ferlin’s Chevy, but the only problem was, they just weren’t Ferlin’s Chevy. Ken wondered if he wasn’t just being too picky, but then the fruits of his patience and focus would eventually pay off.
Being overwhelmed at the end result, Ken couldn’t believe the transfor-mation and remained busy taking it all in.
“So, in 2021, I saw a post from someone in the mini-truck community stating that Ferlin was finally parting ways with his truck, and it was for sale,” Ken says. “I literally yelled at my wife and said, ‘babe remember Ferlin’s truck? It’s for sale!’”
Before Ken could blink twice, he was typing away to reach Ferlin.
“I messaged him so fast, it couldn’t have been more than 30 seconds after seeing the post,” Ken says. “We caught up on lost time and finally agreed to meet up to see the truck in person for the first time in a few years. It was everything I had remembered seeing at Slamfest, and we spent hours and hours catching up and made a deal.”
When we asked what was so special about this Blazer that no other would do, Ken says, “There are so many small details and one-off pieces on this truck, it really takes time to see and recognize them all. It’s clean and simplistic at first, but then you start to notice so many things that just aren’t there from the factory. It’s sometimes hard to believe that I own the truck I once saw as a project. To most people it’s just a bodydropped Blazer, but it means so much more to me.”
Ken is the first to share that he wasn’t the original builder of the truck, but his pride of ownership and sense of obligation to being the caretaker of the Blazer prove that Ferlin made the right choice in passing it on to him.
As for what’s next, Ken does want to make a few changes as time goes on, not to change the Blazer’s history, but instead to add to it.
“My plan with the truck is to get some exposure and make it my own as I go,” he says. “It really deserves to be seen and my son loves it, too, so I hope when he’s a bit older we can cruise together in it.”
Will Ken’s son end up becoming its next caretaker? We guess we’ll just have to wait to find out!
