“The whole build started off with me wanting to build the truck that I have always wanted when I got into the scene back in the late 1980s,” says John Byrne of Surprise, Arizona. “Then, well, it turned into us wanting to build a show-worthy truck out of a garage.” He and his five friends did just that. As for the name: “[John’s wife] had ‘a few’ times during the build referred to the truck as that f-ing truck. OK, maybe it was more than a few times, but after thinking about it, it just seemed to fit.”
In 2014, Shane Carney began the search for a classic truck to restore with his son Gage. At the age of 10, Gage showed an interest in getting his hands dirty in dad’s shop rather than playing video games. So, Shane worked on a deal and brought the neglected ’72 C10 pickup home to begin the rebuild process. Initially, the father and son team focused on making the truck reliable. As farmers are prone to do, function took precedence over aesthetics. But things changed when fortune smiled on the pair.
Let us introduce you to our newest project truck: a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Elevation Crew Cab Short Box 4WD with the brand new 3.0L Duramax diesel engine. Throughout the next several print issues, on Motortopia.com, and over on our YouTube channel, we will show you how the modifications are done to this truck to make it the final version we are after. This truck is being built as a super functional daily driver with a show truck vibe something to bridge the gap between the two styles. Even though a lot of the modifications being done are minimal, the truck will have enough upgraded details to stand on its own at any car show.
In this edition of our Product Showcase, we feature a big brake kit from Andrew’s Tuning and Performance and Classic Performance, adjustable motor mounts form a Ford 7.3L Godzilla V-8 from Outcast Autoworks, Dakota Digital’ latest RTX series, an EFI/Carb Tank for ’65-’72 F-100s from Soulless Innovations, some super cool and retro rubber floor mats from Dojamat, and more!
