Lock’er Down Adding a Console Safe for Your Valuables! Ideally, you should never have to worry about leaving valuables in your truck when you park it or pass the keys to a valet. Sure, locking your doors and arming the alarm will help keep your stuff safe, but some criminals will break in anyway. So, what do you do with those few items you don’t want to go missing? Luckily for us (and bad for the bad guys), Lock’er Down has bolt-in console safes and a few other vehicle safe options for most of the late-model trucks on the market. They give you a place to store things like cash, passports and weapons without having to worry about sticky fingers. Check out the company’s website for photos and videos of would-be thieves thwarted by the Lock’er Down. All the safes are built with 12-gauge steel, powdercoated black and completely made in the USA. Each of the safes are built vehicle-specific, so once installed, the fitment looks like it came installed from the factory. With a couple simple hand tools and a few minutes, you can install one and give yourself the piece of mind of knowing your valuables are safe. For this article, we demonstrate how to install one of Lock’er Down’s safes into a ’19 Ram 1500 Laramie. The company makes two different versions for the 2019 Rams due to the two different styles of sliding center console shelfs. The model we used here is the LD2078 ($289 retail), but we opted to upgrade to the Metal Case Electronic Lock (additional $150 retail). Follow along as we show you the few simple steps needed to install the safe and keep your valuables yours. As you can see, there are no parts to assemble. The safe comes ready to install. With a truck like our ’19 Ram, the factory center console is deep, so adding the safe will still give you full access to the space. Remove the tabs on either side of the console simply by grabbing and pulling toward the center of the console. Lift up and pull out the center divider tab. Remove the console rubber floor liner out of the console floor by pulling it up and out. Open the safe and set it into the console floor. Make sure the sliding console shelf is all the way forward. Use two of the supplied self-tapping screws to screw the safe to the console floor. There are also two more supplied screws. They go on the back of the safe that go into the back wall of the console. Cut the factory console rubber floor liner just forward of where the center divider was removed. Then cut about a quarter inch from the rear section of the rubber floor liner to allow for the thickness of the safe. Reinstall both sections of the factory console rubber floor liner. Stash any of your valuables into the safe. All you have to do to lock your valuables is turn the lock lever and its secure. Last, the Metal Case Electronic Lock we chose with our safe. It can be programmed to any code you wish. To allow personalized entry, not a set factory code you will never remember. The sliding console shelf in our truck also still has full motion. Clears the safe without issue to allow for full access to all console storage space.
